19 teams compete at the 9th Swallowtail Boat Racing Festival

On the morning of January 1st, 2024, 19 teams participated in the 9th annual Boat Racing Festival officially kicked off at the Mechanical Port of Muong Lay town. The New Year worship ceremony (worshipping the river and water god) opened the Boat Racing Festival. This year's race has been expanded, with the participation of 380 athletes from 19 teams, representing provinces such as Son La, Lai Chau; districts including Tua Chua, Muong Cha, as well as various agencies, units, communes, and wards within the town.

The competition is divided into 3 contents, in which the men's provincial team category (5 teams) will be divided into 2 rounds of competition to select the 3 fastest teams for the finals. The categories of mixed men and women (7 teams) and men's district level (7 teams) will be divided into 3 rounds of competition to select 3 teams for the finals. The racing distances are 500m and 1,000m.

The traditional Dragon Tail boat racing festival reflects the spiritual and cultural needs of the local residents. After 8 successful editions, the festival has become an essential gathering for people of various ethnic groups in the town and many neighbouring areas during the Lunar New Year.
