Exciting “Bun Huot Nam” Water Splashing Festival in Dien Bien

“Bun Huot Nam” Water Splashing Festival is one of the most important festivals of the year of the Lao people in Dien Bien, attracting a large number of people and tourists to attend.

The ancestral worship ceremony is led by the village elders of Na Sang 1.

On April 13, at Na Sang 1 village, Nua Ngam commune, Dien Bien district (Dien Bien province), the People's Committee of Dien Bien district held the opening ceremony of the Bun Huot Nam water splashing festival of the Lao ethnic group for the year 2025.

The water splashing New Year festival is closely tied to the settlement and village founding process of the Lao community in Nua Ngam commune and has been preserved by the people for decades. It is an occasion for members of the Lao community to pray for favorable weather, abundant crops, and the flourishing of all living things.

Since 2015, the water splashing festival has been restored and organized by local authorities and residents of the village to coincide with the traditional Lao New Year, aiming to revive cultural traditions and integrate them into daily life and customs of the local people.

On September 11, 2017, the Bun Huot Nam water splashing festival was officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Mr.Nguyen Thai Binh, Chairman of Dien Bien District People's Committee, stated: The “Bun Huot Nam” Water splashing festival in Dien Bien district, 2025, is among the key activities celebrating major national and provincial political events in 2025.

Mr. Binh expressed hope that the 2025 “Bun Huot Nam” Water splashing festival would contribute to promoting and enhancing the quality of the movement "All people unite to build cultural life", and the campaign "All people exercise following the example of great Uncle Ho", while also effectively preserving and promoting intangible cultural heritage values.
