Opening of the 2026 Ban Flower Festival: Spreading Identity, Aspiration of Dien Bien

On the evening of March 8th, at the Provincial Stadium, Dien Bien Province solemnly held the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Ban Flower Festival with the theme “Ban Flower – Aspiration of Dien Bien,” drawing the eager anticipation of a large number of residents and visitors. Attending the opening ceremony were Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh; members and former members of the Party Central Committee; international guests; leaders of central ministries and agencies; and leaders of many localities.

Representing Dien Bien Province were Comrade Tran Tien Dung, Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; members of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People’s Council, the Provincial People’s Committee and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the Province; leaders of departments, agencies and localities; along with a large number of officials, soldiers and people from ethnic groups across the province. The program was broadcast live on Vietnam Television’s VTV1 channel and simultaneously aired on Dien Bien Newspaper and Radio and Television.

The Ban Flower Festival is an annual cultural and tourism event of Dien Bien Province, held every March when ban flowers bloom across the mountains and forests of the Northwest. Over the years, the festival has become a distinctive tourism product of the locality, contributing to promoting the image of the land, people, culture and development potential of the province to friends both domestically and internationally.

With the theme “Ban Flower – Aspiration of Dien Bien,” the 2026 Ban Flower Festival was organized in an increasingly professional and modern manner, harmoniously combining tradition with contemporary artistic creativity. The festival is not only a space to gather and spread the unique cultural values of the 19 ethnic groups in the province, but also an opportunity to promote the image of a friendly Dien Bien rich in cultural identity, contributing to stimulating tourism demand and promoting local socio-economic development.

Provincial Party Secretary Tran Tien Dung delivered the opening speech of the festival.

In his opening remarks, Dien Bien Provincial Party Secretary Tran Tien Dung emphasized that in recent years Dien Bien Province has made efforts to develop culture in association with tourism, gradually building the image of a “Destination of history, ethnic cultural identity and majestic nature.” The province identifies tourism as one of the key driving forces, aiming to become a spearhead economic sector contributing to the development of Dien Bien in a green, smart and sustainable direction.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that the Ban Flower Festival not only honors the cultural and historical values of Dien Bien but also serves as a common festival of ethnic communities in the Northwest. Recalling the Dien Bien Phu Victory “resounding across the five continents and shaking the globe,” the Prime Minister emphasized that the spirit of solidarity and the indomitable will of the nation continue to be a great source of strength for today’s generations in building and developing the country.

The Prime Minister acknowledged Dien Bien’s positive progress in socio-economic development, cultural preservation and tourism development, and requested the province to continue promoting its potential and advantages, accelerate economic restructuring, promote digital transformation and green transition, preserve and promote ethnic cultural values, and develop tourism into a spearhead economic sector.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Council of Dien Bien Le Thanh Do presented the title of Dien Bien Tourism Ambassador to runner-up Vu Thuy Quynh.

Within the framework of the program, Dien Bien Province presented the title of Dien Bien Tourism Ambassador to runner-up Vu Thuy Quynh, a native who was born and raised in Dien Bien. The title aims to help promote the province’s tourism image through media activities, arts and public engagement.

Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee of Dien Bien Le Van Luong presented the decision recognizing Phieng Loi Village (Dien Bien Phu Ward) and Na Su Village (Muong Cha Commune) as tourism destinations.

The Provincial People’s Committee also presented decisions recognizing Phieng Loi Village (Dien Bien Phu Ward) and Na Su Village (Muong Cha Commune) as official tourism destinations, contributing to expanding the province’s tourism destination network.

The highlight of the opening night was a special art program themed “Ban Flower – Aspiration of Dien Bien,” elaborately staged with a combination of traditional arts and modern performance technologies. The program was structured into three chapters: “Dien Bien – The Source of the Northwest,” “Vitality of the Highland People,” and “Flowers of Heaven and Earth – Convergence and Spread.”

Through special musical and dance performances such as “Mùa Hoa Ban lại về”, (The Season of Ban Flowers Returns), “Tây Bắc yêu thương” (Beloved Northwest), “Noọng ơi” and “Chợ phiên vùng cao” (Highland Market), the program vividly portrayed the colorful cultural picture of Northwest ethnic groups, honoring the beauty of the ban flower – a symbol of love, loyalty and the resilient vitality of the people of Dien Bien.

The art night featured many well-known artists such as Truc Nhan, Sen Hoang My Lam, Phuc Bo, Hellen, along with artists from the Dien Bien Provincial Ethnic Arts Troupe, students and numerous community performers. Notably, the program also included performances by an art troupe from Thailand, contributing to strengthening international cultural exchange.

The image of the ban flower running throughout the program was built as a symbol of the character of the people of Dien Bien: resilient in history, persistent in the present and aspiring to rise in the future.

At the end of the opening night, delegates, residents and visitors immersed themselves in the vibrant festival atmosphere, opening a brilliant Ban flower season on the heroic land of Dien Bien. Within the framework of the festival, from March 6 to March 12, many distinctive cultural, sports and tourism activities take place, including performances of traditional cultural rituals, folk song–dance–music festivals, folk games, highland cultural spaces, tourism product exhibitions, street carnivals and many other attractive tourism promotion activities.

Through this series of diverse activities, the Ban Flower Festival continues to affirm its position as a distinctive cultural and tourism event of Dien Bien, contributing to preserving and promoting traditional cultural values, promoting sustainable tourism development and introducing the land and people of Dien Bien to visitors from home and abroad./.
