Lao people's "Bun Huot Nam" Festival (Water-splashing Festival)
Time: From April 14-16 every year - Location: Na Sang 1 Village, Nua Ngam Commune, Dien Bien District, Dien Bien Province.
“Bun Huot Nam” Festival is a traditional New Year celebration of Lao people. Since 2015, the Water Festival has been reorganized by Na Sang 1 Village on the occasion of Lao people’s traditional New Year to restore the traditional cultural elements of Lao people and become a routine and custom of the people here.
Water Festival consists of the main activities such as village worship, ancestor worship... and, the most important event, pray for favorable weather, great proliferation, and abundant crops, and washing away of bad lucks of the old year. Besides, there are also multiples activities for visitors to experience such as life-derived folk games of Tau phac sa - tau lasa (turtles hatch eggs), tying thread on wrists, xua khop mu (tigers grab pigs), ngu kin khiet (snakes catch frogs), phan vieng (foot catching dance).
“Bun Huot Nam” Water Festial was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017.
