Unlocking the agricultural potential of Tuan Giao Commune

Leveraging its advantages in land resources and soil conditions, Tuan Giao Commune has identified the reorganization of agricultural production, the formation of commodity production zones, and the strengthening of market linkages for agricultural products as key and long-term tasks. These efforts aim to gradually unlock the potential and value of local agricultural products, opening up opportunities for sustainable agricultural development and increasing incomes for local residents.

Tuan Giao commune has been designated by the province for planting 2000 hectares of macadamia trees.

Tuan Giao Commune was established through the merger of three administrative units: Tuan Giao Town, Quai Cang Commune, and Quai Nua Commune. This has created new development space with a large agricultural land area and favorable climate, soil, and water resources for production. On that basis, the commune has focused on developing agriculture toward a modern, sustainable, and multi-value approach; promoting crop restructuring; and applying scientific and technological advances, especially digital technology, in production, processing, and product consumption. Commodity-oriented agricultural development is associated with building value chains to enhance the quality, productivity, and added value of key products, particularly macadamia and coffee.

Currently, Tuan Giao Commune is among the leading localities in the province in terms of macadamia cultivation area, with nearly 2,396 hectares. Of this, about 350 hectares are in the harvesting stage, producing approximately 2,442 tons. The total coffee cultivation area exceeds 609 hectares, of which 67.45 hectares are currently bearing fruit, yielding about 165 tons of green coffee beans.

Recognizing that developing macadamia and coffee raw material zones is an important direction in restructuring the agricultural sector, Tuan Giao Commune has actively reviewed, planned, and expanded concentrated raw material areas while converting low-efficiency farmland into macadamia and coffee cultivation. The commune also manages these raw material zones in accordance with regulations, ensuring that production areas are registered, granted planting area codes, and subject to quality control in line with VietGAP, organic standards, or equivalent sectoral standards.

In addition, the commune focuses on strengthening the transfer of scientific and technical knowledge to farmers; developing, consolidating, and improving the effectiveness of cooperative groups and agricultural cooperatives; and building these organizations into central hubs linking farmers, enterprises, and distributors in production, procurement, preliminary processing, and product consumption. These entities serve as the “bridge” connecting stakeholders throughout the value chain.

At present, Tuan Giao Commune has 25 cooperative groups and two cooperatives participating in value chain linkage projects, mainly focusing on macadamia-based products. The commune has developed 17 OCOP products, including 15 products rated three stars and two products rated four stars. Most OCOP products are processed from macadamia and coffee. Typical products include Hong Ky International Coffee HK13; Arabica Espresso (whole bean coffee HK10); Viet Ha macadamia; Thoa Quang slit-shell dried macadamia nuts; and Thoa Doan crispy roasted macadamia kernels.

Mr. Quang Van Cuong, Chairman of the Tuan Giao Commune People’s Committee, stated that identifying macadamia and coffee as key crops, the commune plans to establish and expand commodity-oriented raw material areas for these crops to approximately 4,000 hectares. Of this, 3,000 hectares will be managed through digital databases and mapping systems, while 30 hectares will apply high technology in the direction of smart agriculture. More than 75 percent of the macadamia and coffee area or output is expected to obtain quality certification and be consumed through value chain contracts linking farmers, cooperative groups/cooperatives, and enterprises.

Currently, Tuan Giao Commune has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Viet Bac Coffee Import-Export Co., Ltd. to link product consumption. The enterprise has committed to purchasing all coffee produced by local farmers until 2050 at market prices, but not lower than VND 10,000 per kilogram or USD 0.4 per kilogram (whichever is higher). This commitment is considered an important foundation that builds confidence among farmers to invest in expanding cultivation areas and applying technical processes to improve coffee quality.

In addition, the commune expects that at least one to two preliminary processing or deep-processing plants for macadamia and coffee will be established or operate stably in the commune and surrounding areas. Plans also include developing collective trademarks or geographical indications for macadamia and coffee products, as well as creating at least 16 additional OCOP products rated three stars or higher, including at least 10 products made from macadamia or coffee.

These days, more than 40 households in Phung Hamlet are jointly cultivating green chili peppers on an area of 4.5 hectares and are actively tending the crop in preparation for the upcoming harvest. This is the first production season implemented under a linkage model, with the products already contracted for purchase by an enterprise, opening up a stable and long-term production direction for local residents.

Mr. Lo Duy Thiem, Secretary of the Party Cell of Phung Hamlet, said that when participating in the model, farmers receive detailed guidance on planting, crop care, irrigation, fertilization, and pest control according to safe technical procedures. Thanks to systematic technical support, the chili plants are currently growing well, with an expected average yield of about 50 tons per hectare.

It can be seen that through the coordinated efforts of Party committees and local authorities, together with the proactive innovation in production thinking by cooperatives and farmers, Tuan Giao Commune has created quality agricultural products and gradually formed value chains from production to processing and consumption. This has helped enhance the value of local agricultural products, bring practical economic benefits, create jobs, increase incomes for local people, and promote socio-economic development./.
